School Librarian


Long Bay College is a co-educational secondary school located in a peaceful location near Long Bay Beach and the new Long Bay Village. The school opened in 1975 and has approximately 1900 students and 170 teaching and support staff combined.

We are seeking an experienced Librarian with strong communication and English skills, who is organised, efficient and calm, and who enjoys working with and motivating young people and a large staff to use the library facilities.

Must be passionate about reading and able to create a safe, stimulating and inviting library environment. Proficiency in Office 365, Outlook, Teams, and Accessit Library Management system preferred.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

Liaising with teachers to manage resources for the different curriculum areas, you’ll also be working with and guiding students, including:

  • Promote the library and the range of resources available
  • Support inquiry learning and develop information literacy across all year levels
  • Manage the library orientation programme
  • Ensure Information services are effective and relevant
  • Maintain library register and management system
  • Contribute content to the schools e-learning environment
  • Supervise and assist students to access information
  • Sort, file and maintain shelve resources
  • Collection, resource and stock management
  • Reporting
  • Issue books, general library upkeep
  • Promote the library through displays and special events
  • Implement school-based in-service education for teachers about library use
  • Recommend and order appropriate resources
  • Liaise with external agencies and support groups such as National Library of New Zealand, SLANZA
  • Uphold Health and Safety guidelines

We are looking for a great communicator with the ability to build positive and productive working relationships with teachers, students and the management team.

With a relevant Library qualification or equivalent, the successful candidate will have:

  • Proactive listening skills to understand students learning needs and focus on contributing to the Library success
  • Experience in composite collections of electronic and physical resources
  • Enjoy knowledge sharing and supporting Inquiry Learning and Literacy
  • Strong IT/computer skills
  • Great time management
  • High attention to detail
  • Assertiveness and a good sense of humour
  • Customer focus: always striving for service delivery excellence
  • An understanding of ngā tikanga Māori
  • Library experience (preferred)

Remuneration as per the Support Staff in Schools Collective Agreement, Grade C, Step to be confirmed conditional upon library experience and qualifications, plus a qualifications allowance if applicable. Permanent position, full-time hours Mon-Fri (8am-4pm) during term time (37.5 hours per week, 40 weeks per annum).
